Miyako lies about 300 km southwest of Okinawa's main island. The "Miyako Blue" water clarity is world-class, and the 2015 Irabu Bridge added a new landmark.
Miyako Basics
Port overview
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Cruise port | Hirara Port Cruise Terminal |
| Location | Hirara district, Miyako Island |
| Port to downtown | walkable (restaurants and rental car offices nearby) |
| Port to Yonaha Maehama Beach | ~20โ25 minutes by car |

Hirara Port's cruise terminal is next to the downtown of Hirara โ port-to-town access is friendlier than at Ishigaki. The main sights (Yonaha Maehama, Irabu Bridge, Higashi-Hennazaki) are away from the port and require transport.
As a cruise port
Strengths:
- World-class Miyako Blue water clarity
- Yonaha Maehama Beach โ sometimes called Japan's most beautiful
- Irabu Bridge (3,540 m) for scenic drives
- Port is close to town
- Distinctive local food: Miyako soba, yukishio (snow salt)
Caveats:
- Limited public transit; rental car is the ideal
- Strong sun in summer with intense UV
- Possible cancellation in rough weather
- Spread-out sights mean strong time management
Top Sights
Yonaha Maehama Beach
Miyako's signature beach โ sometimes called Japan's most beautiful. White sand and "Miyako Blue" water give a postcard-perfect tropical-paradise vibe. Paired with Sunayama Beach and Toguchi Beach as Miyako's top three.

Irabu Bridge
A 3,540-meter bridge opened in 2015 โ the longest free-of-charge bridge in Japan. The "Miyako Blue" view from the bridge is breathtaking, and the drive itself is the experience. Beaches on Irabu Island, across the bridge, add to the day.

Why it works: A white lighthouse at the tip and the contrast of waves crashing against blue water is striking. Strong winds in summer โ hold onto your hat.
Sunayama Beach
The most accessible main beach from town. Climb over a sandy hill, and a hidden beach opens up โ the route makes it an attraction in itself. A natural rock arch is the photogenic landmark.

| Entrance | free |
| Time required | ~45 min โ 1 hour |
| Access | ~10โ15 minutes by taxi from Hirara Port |
Why it works: Closest main beach to town, short transit time. The sand-hill climb is the part to wear good shoes for.

- Miyako soba diners: several around town

Public transit is thin; rental car is the most flexible option on Miyako.

Miyako Food
Miyako soba
Miyako's soul food. A clear bonito-based broth with thin curly noodles. Sliced pork belly or pork spareribs are standard. Reasonable: ~ยฅ600โ900 at diners around town.
Yukishio (snow salt)
Made from underwater seawater off Miyako, mineral-rich. Fine texture โ the name comes from "snow-like salt." Buy at the factory shop or at souvenir stores.
Mango
Miyako is one of Japan's top domestic mango regions. Strong sweetness, strong aroma, melting texture. Peak season is JuneโAugust โ if you cruise in that window, fresh mangoes are on the table.
Sata andagi
Traditional Okinawan fried sweet doughnuts. Crisp outside, moist inside. Sold in convenience stores and markets on Miyako.
Tips for Miyako
1. Pre-book transit
Rental car is best, but cruise days concentrate demand. Book before sailing, or grab the rental car office near the port early morning.
2. Best time for Miyako Blue
Late morning to early afternoon, with light angling down into the water, produces the strongest blue. Sunny morning at Yonaha Maehama is the ideal.
3. Sun protection seriously
Miyako UV is brutal โ even on cloudy days. SPF 50+, hat, rash guard.
4. Sunayama needs proper shoes
The route over the sand hill needs sneakers, not heels or fashion sandals.
5. Aim to be back 1.5 hours before departure
Higashi-Hennazaki, Irabu Bridge โ 30โ40 minutes back to port. Plan with buffer.
Wrapping Up
Miyako combines world-class "Miyako Blue" water, Yonaha Maehama Beach, the Irabu Bridge drive, and food like Miyako soba and yukishio. A cruise port with a very high payoff.
- 4โ5 hours: Sunayama plus downtown food
- 6โ7 hours: Yonaha Maehama and Irabu Bridge
- 8+ hours: Higashi-Hennazaki, Yonaha Maehama, Irabu Bridge โ the works
Pre-book transit and you can fit a lot in even with limited time. Miyako's nature is hard to forget.
